Pruning 2024

A cold morning pre-pruning.

The vineyard uses the Scott Henry Trellis System which is a four-cane, cane-
pruned system, this means each year we remove the canes that were tied
down the previous year and replace with the growth that occurred in the prior
year, so this year’s canes are from 2023 the previous tied canes were from
2022
This is done manually throughout the whole vineyard using secateurs to cut
the canes back and create the canopy for the year.

Vineyard post pruning

The vineyard looks very bare post-pruning, the canes will be tied to the
fruiting wire in late April /early May when a frost event is less likely to
happen. In larger vineyards than ours, the tying down and pruning are often
done earlier to be able to cover the amount of ground but, with the plot we
have currently, the pruning and tying down can be delayed, being beneficial
in giving the vines a better chance of having healthy canes for the year.
